A graduate of Duke University, Margarette Shim earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and took advantage of opportunities to study abroad in Europe and Korea. Margarette Shim spent time in Seoul, Korea working as an Editor and Research Assistant at a think tank, the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy. She also worked as a Contributing Editor, Copy Editor, and Editorial Board Member of The Korea Post, in Seoul, Korea. Margarette Shim studied law at the Washington College of Law at American University during which time she was on the ABA Administrative Law Review and was selected to participate in an international law summer program in Paris, Geneva, and Brussels.
Margarette Shim joined Dechert, LLP (formerly Dechert, Price & Rhoads) as an associate. She researched legal and compliance issues for the firm, including broker-dealer issues, trading practices, and fund valuation and pricing policies. From Dechert, LLP, Margarette Shim was recruited by J. & W. Seligman & Co., as a Staff Attorney. Margarette Shim organized funds and maintained disclosure requirements for registered funds.
After her time at J. &. W. Seligman & Co., Margarette Shim worked at GE Asset Management, Inc. Margarette Shim was employed as Vice President and Associate General Counsel for GE Asset Management, Inc. as member of the senior leadership band, helping to oversee the management of the firm’s mutual fund assets.
Subsequently, Margarette Shim was Associate General Counsel at Basso Capital Management, L.P., a hedge fund affiliated with DKR Capital and based in Stamford, Connecticut. Margarette Shim, thereafter, was employed as Regulatory-Compliance Counsel at D.E. Shaw & Co., L.P., a quantitative strategy hedge fund investment adviser managing over $37 billion dollars.
Margarette Shim is a member of the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the Down Town Association and the Metropolitan Club.
